Urengoy, Russia's Largest And Main Gas Pipeline On Fire, Germany Accuses Russia Of Pushing Up Energy Prices

A fire has started at a 1400mm pipeline in Russia. The Urengoy is the largest gas extraction facility in the country, and the second-largest natural gas field in the world, after South Pars/North Dome Gas-Condensate field in the Persian Gulf which is shared between Iran and Qatar.

Germany has accused Russian state-controlled gas giant Gazprom of attempting to push up energy prices by cutting its gas supplies in half.

While Russia claims that the reason is due to service equipment in the Nord Stream pipeline, German economy minister Robert Habeck said that it's 'a political decision' not a technical decision.

"It is obviously a strategy to unsettle and drive up prices," he said.

Gazprom had previously said it would be cutting the Nord Stream 1 gas flow from 167 cubic meters a day to 100 cubic meters. Then on Wednesday, it said that it would be cutting it again to 67 cubic meters.

Gazprom limited its gas to Italy by about 15% on Wednesday according to the ENI energy firm. About 40% of Italy's imports are from Russia.
